Zakeya

After surviving a traumatic brain injury in 2020, Zakeya’s doctors told her she was a miracle. Through determination, therapy, and faith, she rebuilt her life; and in November 2023, she walked into the Habitat office to learn about homeownership.

Despite starting with no construction experience, Zakeya learned to frame walls, install windows, and lay flooring. Later, she joined a church mission trip to help flood victims rebuild and was able to utilize the skills she learned at Habitat.

“Andrew was more than a guide; he was a lifeline,” she said of Habitat’s staff support. “He walked with me step by step.”

Determination = Home Ownership

Once accepted into the program, Zakeya’s determination never wavered. She completed her sweat equity hours in just three months!

Standing in her new home, Zakeya reflected on how far she’s come: a survivor, a college graduate, and the first in her family to own a home.

  • To every donor, volunteer, and sponsor, thank you. I would have never qualified to be a homeowner without Habitat. Our life has changed overnight.  — Zakeya, Habitat Homeowner
