2023 Women Build

$2.6M Goal

2023 is our biggest year yet! Our fundraising goal for the year is $2.6M to build 20 homes in our community.

Each year, our Women Build fundraiser helps us get closer to creating affordable homeownership opportunities in Allen, Huntington, and Wells counties.

Amber-Closing

Amber

The average time a renter remains in one location is 2.3 years, while a homeowner’s average time in their home is 8 years. As a mother of three, Amber applied to the Habitat program because she desired the security and stability that comes with owning a home, and she was laser-focused on achieving that goal for her family.

After Amber completed her 200 sweat equity hours volunteering on the build site and the ReStore she drove by her house every day on her lunch breaks, waving at the crew to say hi and check in on the progress. Her goal was always in view, pushing her to complete her homeownership education and financial literacy classes.

Terrie

Terrie is a mother, grandmother of 10, cancer survivor, and active church member. Terrie’s current apartment is small and hasn’t been updated in over 60 years. “I like my neighbors, but the roof leaks and there’s mold in the apartment. I would love a place of my own, something to make beautiful.”

In her new home, Terrie will finally have a washer and dryer close by, central air, room for a garden (and maybe a dog!), and plenty of space for her grandkids to stay the night. She’s an avid crafter, so plans to turn one of the bedrooms into a craft room have already begun. This Women Build season, you may just meet Terrie — she can often be found on the construction site serving homemade lunches to volunteers.

Geri + Ro

As cousins and best friends, Geraldine and Rocille (Geri and Ro), have lived in an old family home as far back as they can remember. But, that home has been in desperate need of repair and is quite literally falling apart. The repairs are unfortunately beyond what their family can afford, which led them to begin their journey as first-time homebuyers.

Geri and Ro are both bright lights at Habitat and proof that you can achieve anything in your life in any season. The biggest thing that will change for them as homebuyers will be not constantly worrying about the structure and safety of the place they call home.  “We will just rest, relax, and enjoy our new home.”
