Habitat Kicks Off Historic Build Season for 2022

This year is a historic year for us at Habitat for Humanity of Greater Fort Wayne as we plan to build 19 affordable homes in our community – the most we’ve built in a season in our local affiliate’s history!

Over the last 36 years, we’ve averaged around seven homes built per year. Since 2020, we’ve exceeded that historic annual average, and this year’s goal of 19 homes nearly triples it. As the need for affordable homeownership opportunities continues to grow in the Greater Fort Wayne area, Habitat is excited to meet that need by elevating its impact on the community through increased home production.

“The need for safe, decent, and affordable housing has never been greater,” said Andrew Gritzmaker, CEO at Habitat for Humanity of Greater Fort Wayne. “Market factors such as high-interest rates, rapid inflation, and low housing stock have made the dream of homeownership all but impossible for many hard-working families across the nation. It is for these reasons Habitat for Humanity of Greater Fort Wayne is dedicated to increasing our average housing production to meet this incredible need.”

This year, all of our builds will be located in Fort Wayne’s southeast neighborhoods. A few will continue to adhere to the Bauer and square-style home layouts, which are approximately 1,100 sq. ft. with three bedrooms and one bathroom. In an effort to get closer to a standard market product, we have also added two new home layouts that will make up most of this year’s build list.
