Accountant

Position Overview

The Accountant will be a key member of Habitat’s finance and administrative team, actively supporting a complex non-profit organization that blends construction, mortgage management, retail, human services, and fundraising.  The ideal candidate will enjoy working in a fast-paced environment, love details and intricate bookkeeping, and have expertise in accrual accounting.

Main Responsibilities

  • Bookkeeping: Proactively maintain financial records and conduct the month-end close.
  • Monthly Financial Reporting: Prepare balance sheets, profit and loss statements, graphs, charts, etc.
  • Accounts Payable: Review invoices submitted for payment and process all bill, credit card, and tax payments in a timely manner.
  • Annual Audit: Compile information for the annual workers’ compensation and financial statement audits.
  • Accounts Receivable: Oversee invoice creation, deposits, and bank reconciliations.
  • Administer Payroll: Process bi-weekly payroll and monthly retirement contributions.
  • Collaborate in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard company assets.
  • Stay up to date with industry regulations, accounting standards, and tax laws to ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Assist with special projects and ad-hoc financial analysis.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Competencies

  • In-depth knowledge of accrual accounting principles and financial reporting standards (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks Online and Microsoft Excel. Experience with higher-level software is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Skillful at efficiently composing and preparing written correspondence.
  • Resourceful and able to find resolutions with little direction.
  • Discretion, confidentiality, and good judgment is non-negotiable.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or CMA designation preferred).
  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience in bookkeeping, monthly reporting, annual audit preparation, A/P, and A/R required.
  • 7 or more years of related experience preferred.
  • Nonprofit, construction job costing, and/or mortgage management experience a plus.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting or standing at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity for tablet and computer use.
  • Able to utilize the telephone to communicate with others, inside and outside of an office environment.
