  • “I let my kids think I was working multiple jobs so I could complete the Habitat program without them knowing.”

Jessica is a mother of four and the Director of Operations for a local Fort Wayne non-profit that provides transportation services to seniors, persons with disabilities, children, and youth. When her apartment rent unexpectedly increased by over $300/month, Jessica applied for the Habitat program to see if she would qualify for an affordable, stable mortgage.

Once accepted, Jessica kept the Habitat program a secret from her kids so she could surprise them in the end! Fast forward through 200 hours of sweat equity, 8 homeowner and financial education classes, budgeting, and saving…Jessica was finally able to surprise them with a home of their own.

  • “This home will provide stability for my family and allow me to create financial security for my children.”

Hard Work + Determination

As the third person to submit her application (out of 1,000’s), Jessica was always on top of any Habitat program requirements. She was determined to become a homeowner — she even completed all 200 hours of her sweat equity in under 100 days!

“I would like to give God the honor. Thank you to all my friends and co-workers, for being patient with me and giving me the opportunity to take time off to complete all of my hours.”

What ‘Affordable’ Means to Families

With 1 in 6 households paying 50% or more of their income on housing, it’s easy to see how affording groceries, healthcare, gas, clothing, school supplies, and other necessities is nearly impossible for many families in our community.

As a Habitat homeowner, families will never pay more than 26% of their gross monthly income on their mortgage. As housing costs continue to rise, Habitat is able to continue offering affordable homeownership options to low- and middle-income families in Greater Fort Wayne.

Affordable homeownership means less stress month-to-month, more room to save for the unexpected, and financial equity that can be passed down for generations.
